Top flight teams qualify for semi finals

Former Kenya Volleyball Federation League champions General Service Unit and Kenya Defence Forces stormed into the semi final of KVF Challenge Cup Saturday after knocking out Karangia and Giakanja respectively in the quarter finals at Kamkunji stadium, Nyeri County.

GSU who also won all their league matches Friday beat Karangia by straight sets (25-14,25-14,25-15) same as hosts KDF who whitewashed Giakanja by a sister set scores of (25-15,25-21,25-19) in the other men’s quarters to  book an early semis Sunday set for Sunday.

Giakanja which is also based in Nyeri as KDF gave good account of themselves before the home crowd in this encounter when they stretched the Army men to the tail end of the second set despite losing the opening set 25-15. The sevond set eneded 25-21in favour of KDF.

But experience of Sila Makiso and setter Elisha Aliwa played out as the game grew older. Makiso who returned to action after taking time off for the entire of last season killed the game with a thunder strike to aid his side to a comfortable win and a guaranteed semi final place on Sunday. Other quarter final matches were still going at the time we went to the press.

Nyeri based soldiers easily matched to the quarters after winning all their pool D matches. KDF had  beaten Karangi  3-0 (25-20,25-23,25-12) in the only group stages matches after the other opponent withrew in the last munites.

Earlier, GSU had beaten Giakanja 3-0 (25-14,25-23,25-20) and a sister sets win  (25-20,25-13,25-13) over Post Bank to sail to the quarters. Giakanja extended Post Bank’s bad outing with a 3-1 (7-25,25-23,25-14,25-14) win in the group stages.

Forest Rangers and a Prisons Mombasa also booked their quarter finals to set up a clash on the final day.

Rangers had beaten Nyandarua 3-0 ( 25-14,25-11,25-15) and  Mungaria 3-0 (25-20,25-19,25-17) on their way to the quarters. Mombasa Prisons  saw offoppositions from Biriri  whim they humbled 3-0 (25-15,25-9,25-23)

Prisons Mombasa vs Kamakwa 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-13)

Kenya Prison and Kenya Kenya Commercial Bank are most likely to meet in the women’s final after winning all their round robing pool matches.

In some of the secret matches, KCB  extended their dominance over  mount Kenya University whom they had beaten in league matches when they inflicted another straight sets win  (25-11,25-12,25-10) while the new look Prisons beat Tetu High school 3-0 (2514,25-9,25-8) on women’s pool A.

Other pool A matches saw Laikipia triumph over Nyandarua with 3-0 (25-12,25-9,25-14) before registering a second win again  Kamwenja courtesy of a 3-0 (27-25,25-9,26-24) sets.
