Dubai7s: Shujaa shines in opener

Shujaa, the national rugby7s team started on a high note in this season’s HSBC by beating Canada 29-15 in the pool A match opener in Dubai, United Arab Emirates today.

Kenya from five points down to beat the North American side when Nathan Hiriyama went over for the opening score in the first penalty of the game.

Former footballer turned rugby player Sammy Oliech punished the Canadian to level the score.

Innocent Simiyu charges were on top when lll round Shujaa try scorer Collins Injera and captain Oscar Ayodi added converted tries saw Shujaa take a 19-5 lead into the interval.

Dennis Ombachi got Shujaa’s fourth after the restart before brilliant interplay between Eden Agero and Injera saw Injera land his brace for Shujaa’s 29-5 win.

Isaac Kay played in Pat Kay to go over for Canada, the scores 29-10 with a minute to play. Pat would then land his brace to bring Canada to 29-15.

Kenya is in pool A alongside series defending champions South Africa and Uganda.
