Former world cross country champion Agnes Tirop Jebet and double Lagos City Marathon winner Abraham Kiptum were the winners this year’s Ziwa Farmers 10km run in Uasin Gishu County.
Jebet, battled out with ever green Sandrafelis Chebet and Barcelona marathon winner Valary Ayabei in the women’s category.
At 2km, Sandra had dropped behind leaving Jebet and Ayabei to call the shots.
Jebet timed 31:06.2 beating Ayabei to second in 31:07.1 and Chebet settled third in 31:18.2.
Stacy Ndiwa (31:27.4) and world steeplechase record holder Ruth Jebet of Bahrain finished fifth in 32:01.4.
Kiptum who comes from Nandi County clocked 27:44.0 while Prague 10km winner Bernard Kimeli placed second in 27:46.0 as Josphat Kipchirchir sealed the podium in 27:48.0.
Josphat Bett and Alfred Barkach timed 27:51.0 and 28:03.0 respectively to close the top five finishers.
It was a tough battle from the gun point at Kabenes in the outskirts of Eldoret town with the men’s 10km battling along the Eldoret-Ziwa road.
Kiptum, Kimeli and Kipchirchir broke away at the 5km mark upping their pace. At the 9km mark, the race had been reduced to Kiptum and Kimeli who had opened a wide gap.
They were running should-to-shoulder until the remaining 20metres when Kiptum outsprinted the world 10km leader Kimeli to bag the crown.
Kiptum who finished second at the Amsterdam marathon after winning Lagos City for the second time said he was not prepared for the race.
“I had not started my training but I only came to run.Suprisingly I won. It was a very tough one especially when we were running with my competitor Kimeli.I knew he was strong but I had to study him well for a sprint finish,” Kiptum said.
