Commonwealth Games: Stacy Ndiwa wins first silver for Kenya

Former Commonwealth Youth Games 1,500m champion Stacy Ndiwa won Kenya the first silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia today.

The Africa championships bronze medalist fell to Ugandan Stella Chesang won the second gold for Uganda in 10,000m denying Kenya the titles they have dominated for 24 years.

In 1994, Jane Omoro was the only time that Kenya failed to win in the 12  lap race but in all competitions Kenya has been winning gold-Esther Wanjiru (1998), Selina Kosgei (2002), Lucy Kabuu (2006), Grace Momanyi (2010) and Joyce Chepkirui (2014).

Ndiwa controlled the race but Chesang last spring earned her first gold timing 31:45:30 ahead of Ndiwa’s 31:46.36.

Another Ugandan Mercyline Chelangat won bronze (31:48.41) before  Beatrice Mutai (Kenya) came fourth as Sandrafelis Chebet finished 10thwith her personal best time of 32:11.92.

Joshua Cheptegei claimed the first gold for Uganda on Sunday in 5,000m with settling for bronze through Edward Zakayo.
