Chris Kiai won the first round of KCB Road to Masters held on Saturday on par 72 Ruiru golf club to become the first golfer to qualify for the KCB Masters Pro-Am tournament to be staged in July at Karen County Club.
Handicap 16 golfer beat other crowded field of 272 golfers to emerge top after sinking an impressive 40 stable ford points with 19 points in the inward nine before returning with 21 at the back nine.
The second edition of Karen Master’s event will take place July 19th to 22nd.
“I’m overly excited to have won the first qualifier of KCB Karen Masters and I wish to thank my four ball for the good company and play. When we teed off for this event I didn’t image I would beat such big field and it only came as a pleasant surprise when results were posted, ’’ Kiai said.
With wildcard being awarded, men’s nearest to the pin winner Ben Njuguna became the first beneficiary followed by guest winner playing off scratch handicap George Felix, staff winner Benard Kotonya, lady winner Veronica Mwaura who is also the lady captain and men’s winner Michael Chege.
Handicap 21 Chege finished second after losing to Kiai on Count back after shooting 19 points in the first nine and 21 in the second for 40 stable ford points.
In the commercial, Frank Munyua and Linus Wachira were the winners of first and second nine winners with 22 and 20 points respectively.
Longest drive winners were Francis Nzili (Men) and Lucy Njuguna (Lady) as Ben Njuguna and Susan Kanyora were the winners of nearest to the pin prizes. The later climbed to the podium again for second lady winner prize behind lady winner Veronica Mwaura.
Limuru will be hosting the second round of the Road To The Masters series on May 26th with Eldoret hosting the third round on June 16, Mombasa on June 30 and the last qualifier at Muthaiga Golf Club on July 7.
Six winners from each of the participating clubs will get automatic qualification to play at the KCB Karen Masters Pro-am tournament on July 17.
The criterion will see the overall winner, men winner, lady winner, staff winner and guest winner get automatic qualification, while the wild card will see one person grab a ticket.
The wild card ticket will be given to any of the following categories; best first nine, best second nine, nearest to the pin men and lady, junior golfer, longest drive lady and men, at the discretion of clubs.
