Nderitu Gitonga reclaim top spot, defends Kitui title

Patrick Nderitu Gitonga reclaimed his top seed after defending his Kitui Scrabble Championships title, the 6th meeting of Scrabble Kenya championships in count down for the Africa Scrabble Championships in Kampala, Uganda.

Nderitu who had lost Kenya One to Allan Oyende, timed his final charge to perfection in the final 8 rounds to retain the Kitui open title he won last year at Park side Villa Hotel.

After finishing 6th on the opening day that was led by Nyeri’s Kimani Macharia-who finished 7th, fended off stiff challenge from top seed Allan Oyende winning 425-415 in the penultimate round 17 game to win the championship and retake his top seed status on 13 +599 score card.

Standard Chartered Bank captain Martins Mutahi was half a point back on 12.5 +115 with Nairobi’s Bernard Koyyoko (12 +760) closing the podium

As Top seed Oyende was a credible 4th overall

Comas Mochere maintained his day one status and won the open category, to earn his promotion to the premier division ahead of Tarus Kipruto and Samuel Njuguna

In schools category, Kabare Girls dominated the championships with Cynthia Towett and Salama Muthoni dropping only one point in 10 rounds. Towett edged teammate Muthni on spread to be crowned champion as Caroline Muya of Buruburu girls finishing third.

Action now swings to Busia County for the Madaraka cup on 2nd and 3rd June.
