General Service Unit (GSU) and Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) worked their way to defend the Africa Merchant Assurance Company (AMACO) cum Paul Bitok International Volleyball tournament that ended today at Eldoret Polytechnic.
Both teams, which are the national Kenya Volleyball Federation champions won back to back titles as they switch focus to next month’s Nandi County championships.
In men’s category, GSU beat former champions Kenya Prison I repeat of last year’s final in a five setter thriller. GSU won the first set in 25-19 but the champions won the second 25-20 and in an alternating manner, warders won the third 25-22 but the determined GSU won the last determining two sets of 25-19 and 15-12.
The reigning Africa Volleyball Club Championships bronze medalist won the KPC derby in women’s category.
KPC A beat their KPA B in another five setter. The champions won the opener in 25-13 followed by the runner up in 21-25 followed by a long stretch of 29-31 for A and won the last two in 25-15 and 15-13.
Kenya prison failed to revenge against their perennial opponents KPC in the semifinal match. The warders, who lost to the Africa Volleyball club championships in Cairo, Egypt last month, KPC won 3-1 to propel to the final match.
KPC won back to back opening sets in 25-22 and 25-16 but resilient Kenya Prison Kenya bounced back to take the third set to delay the final qualifiers in 25-18. Focused to defend their title, KPC managed to win the fourth set in 25-22.
Coming onto the tournament for the second time, Bungoma County fell to KPC B in another semifinal match played in court B. after toiling in group stages, losing 1 out of three matches, Bungoma based team lost in a thrilling four setter match in 24-26, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-16.
The win set the final play for the pipeline derby.
It was an easy win for GSU in the first semifinal against Kenya Ports Authority. They won in three straight sets of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18 to book for a final match against Kenya Prison who beat Administration Police (A.P) in another easy 3-0 (25-18, 25-14 and 25-18).
