Top seed Ismael Changawa will lead the Kenyan squad at the fourth-coming Davis Cup Africa Zone Five III Tennis Championships to be staged at the Nairobi Club.
With Kenya hosting the tournament, Changawa leads the provisional squad of eight players that were named today by Tennis Kenya, with the tournament returning into the country since 2002.
The five day event-from June 18th to 23rd-, Kenya is seeded second behind Benin with top seed Changawa and youngster Ryan Randiek highlighting the selection.
With Kenya targeting to compete at this year’s Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group II, are ranked behind Benin in the competition that has attracted nine countries.
Benin and Kenya, who are placed 79th and 86th respectively in the Davis Cup ranking, reached the semi-finals last year in Egypt.
Third-seeded Algeria are ranked 88th followed by Niger, who are ranked 102nd and Namibia 106th.
Other participants are Rwanda (120), Mozambique (122), Cameroon (127) and Uganda, who are not ranked.
Kenya narrowly missed out on promotion to Euro/Africa David Cup Group II last year after falling to Zimbabwe 2-0 in Africa Zone Group III semi-final.
Kenya, which first played in the Davis Cup in 1974, staged its best performance to reach the Europe/Africa Zone Group I semi-finals in 1992, hence missing to qualify for the World Group.
Changawa was named alongside Ibrahim Kibet, Sheil Kotecha and Oliver Kigotho, who formed last year’s team. Others in the team are Albert Njogu, Petty Andanda and Kevin Cheruiyot.
