Substitute Esse Akida scored the winning goal for Harambee Starlets against Equatorial Guinea in Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCN) qualifier played today at Machakos stadium.
Akida scored the second goal in the 2-1 win against the two time Africa football champions to give an advantage in the Saturday’s return leg to be played Equatorial Guinea.
Boho Sayo scored first for the visitors with 35 minutes into the match, heading in from Genoveva Nze’s corner to command the 1-0 lead.
But the lead survived for seven minutes as Tereza Engesha’s thunderbolt levelled the score into the beak.
Coach David Ouma had learnt the game and super sub Akida was introduced, replacing Sheryl Angachi on 54th minute.
Akida tapped in another substitute Cynthia Musungu’s cross to liven the packed stadium.
The Starlets will need a draw of any kind in the return leg to qualify for a back to back AWCN qualifier to be staged in Ghana later in the year after making it in the 2016 finals stage in Yaounde, Cameroon.
