Defending champions St. Anthony’s Kitale and Wiyeta Girls made their presence known by winning their opening matches in the Rift Valley Secondary School Sports Association played at Hill School grounds.
But new champions are expected in volleyball boys and girls categories after then championships [ions Cheptil boys and girls respectively. Cheptil boys were banned from the championships for one year after fielding ineligible player while girls lost to AIC Kosirai during Nandi County championships held last week.
The 2017 soccer finalists St. Anthony from Trans Nzoia stamped their authority by shining against new comers Girgir Mixed from Samburu in boys under 19 category.
Geoffrey Ochwat netted a brace for Kitale based team to wallop Girgir 6-1 in a one sided match in field in pool D.
Ian Karani opened the score with three minutes into the match followed by Titus Kapchanga three minutes later before captain. Leading by example Captain Silas Ogana netted the third in on the 9th minute to end the first half 3-0.
On resumption, Daniel Lakadaa netted a consolation for his Gigir side on 32nd minute but striker Ochwat replied on 35th minute for a 4-1 lead. Lucas Maina scored the sixth before Ochwat netted hius second to seal a 6-1 victory.
Captain, despite winning the first match with a big margin, he was optimistic that they will do well in the championships.
“It is too early to determine that we are champions but we will do our best to ensure that we shine at the end of the championships to book a national ticket,” said Ogana.
With efforts to stamp authority, Wiyeta enjoyed their first match, winning 2-0 against Kapcherop girls in pool A match.
Goals from Gentrix Shikangwa and Laventine Lihemo ensured that their dominance for the former national champions.
Lihemo wasted three scoring chances found back of the net on 45th minute to secure a win.
In other matches Wareng high school came from a goal down to beat West Pokot’s Kapenguria Boys 2-1 as Felix Warui scored a solitary goal against Chebilat in pool B while Saseta girls won 2-0 against Our Lady of Hope and Naskol beat Chief Risa 3-0.
In volleyball Uasin Gishu’s Kondabilet won against Chewoyet in straight sets of 25-18, 25-22 and 26-24. It was a similar score in girls’ categort when Kesogon beat Loima in 25-15, 25-04 and 25-09 as football giants Tartar girls won 3-0 against Moi Girls in 25-12, 25-16 and 25-15.
