New talents emerged at this year’s Coast Region Secondary School Sports Association (CSSSA) that came to a close on Monday evening at Matuga and Kwale High school.
The new champions that will represent the region at the national championships that kicks off on July 20th include Shimoni Boys in volleyball and Kinondo secondary in boys under 16 soccer while the usual Kaya Tiwi will make a trip to Eldoret as well as former champions Shimba Hills returns.
Shimoni boys and Kindondo secondary were the surprise winners of the championships. In a thrilling five setter final, Shimon boys ousted Mwalughamba 3-2 on volleyball final while Kinondo won against Mkongani by a solitary goal, who capitalized on the absence of usual suspects Waa Boys and Tononoka after they banned for fielding ineligible player.
After being cold for six years, Shimba Hills will return to the national championships after edging out Ramisi Secondary 2-0 to reclaim the boys’ under-19 soccer title.
For the first time, Shimoni Boys will represent the region in volleyball boys. The schoool has been trailing Waa Boys for the past four years.
Kwale Girls surprised then national champions St John’s Kaloleni 2-0 to retain their under-19 football title, while Waa Girls defeated Kwale Girls 1-0 for the under -16 title.
Kaya Tiwi won the netball title for the the third year in a row when they beat Mwakitawa Secondary 51-15 in a tough final at Matuga Girls, while Kwale High defeated Kaya Tiwi 15-0 for the rugby sevens title..
