Hosts Egerton University popularly referred as Wasps won their opening two matches in the penultimate series of Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) Rugby Sevens Series played at the university grounds today.
As series leaders and defending champions Kenyatta University (KU)-Blak Blad, registered mixed results in the 4th leg meeting in the two day event ahead of final leg that will be staged at University of Nairobi (UoN) in a fortnight.
The Wasps first inflicted pain to Technical University of Kenya (TUK) by a smaller margin of 7-0 in their opening match before surprisingly defeating UoN’s, Mean Machine 26-14 in the second match.
Egerton, who not won any series, fought hard with a converted try to seal the victory in the last minutes of the match.
But it was unrealistic dream when the hosts beat Mean Machine, which was the favourite into the match. The hosts led 26-00 into water break but fighting spirit for UON ensured doubled converted tries worked for them to reduce the gap.
Even though Machines lost the second match, they had beaten Maseno University 24-12 in the first match of the field while Maseno recovered to defeat TUK 21-0 as TUK.
University of Eldoret (UoE)-Trojans collected maximum points in the opening two matches to seal for a slot in the second round.
In the first match, Eldoret based institution walloped Meru University 26-0 before narrowly beating series leaders and defending champions KU 24-12. Initially KU had won 24-10 against Multi-Media University (MMU) as the latter recovered in the second match defeating Meru 24-05.
In the opener, UoE camped in the opponent’s half and dominated the whole match. But they had to work hard, coming from 12-0 down to win in 14-12.
Playing the first tournament in the series, Moi University was baptized with fire, losing 17-07 to Zetec University in the opener.
After winning the opening leg in Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) fell to DeKUT 5-0 in the opener.
UoN 24-12 Maseno, KU 24-10 MMU, USIU 21-12 Maseno, Egerton 7-0 TUK, MMUST 0-5 DeKUT, Moi 7-17 Zetec, Maseno 21-0 TUK, UoN 14-26 Egerton, UoE 14-12 KU and MMU 24-5 Meru.
