Top seed scrabble players Allan Oyende and Nderitu Gitonga will be the star attraction at this weekend’s Kisii County Scrabble Championships.
The two-day event that kicks off on Saturday ends on Sunday has attracted at least 70 players following a successful Scrabble Kenya selecting a formidable team for this year’s World English-language Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) last weekend.
Ufanisi Resort will be the venue for action as Nderitu of Kirinyaga club and Nairobi Oyende battle of wits takes centre stage. The duo anchored the Word Warriors, the national scrabble team to win the East, Central and Southern Africa (ECASA) Scrabble championships that played hosted in Livingstone, Zambia.
Other top players tom watch includes Bernard Koyyoko of Nairobi’s Stima Club following his maiden win in Mombasa last month.
The inaugural Kisii champion (2015) Manase Otieno will be leading a debutant team from his new base in Bomet County
Local Organising Committee led by Wenwa Akinyi, was optimistic that the championships will be a success.
“Kisii is ready to welcome players for a memorable fantastic championship. We’ll have a moment of remembrance in honour of our departed colleague Charles Kimani before start of play,” said Akinyi.
Kimani who’s being laid to rest on Saturday was part of the Posta team that won gold in KECOSO games in 2016.
