Philemon Rono, Cynthia Jerop crowned Kaptagat half marathon champions

Double Toronto marathon champion Philemon Rono and 2009 world cross country junior bronze medalist were crowned the champions of the inaugural Kaptagat Forest half marathon ran today.

Rono won the race in 62:23.6 in a race ran in two counties of Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu as the two counties use the race to converse Kaptagat forest. The event dubbed ‘Sports for Conservation’ started at Kapchawat in Elgeyo Marakwet through Kaptagat Forest, ending at Strawburg shopping centre in Usin Gishu County.

“Apart from winning the race, I wanted to be part of the motivation to the upcoming athletes. Winning at home is good for me and the locals who cheered me along the way,” said Rono.

Coming from Global Sports Communication, Rono was welcomed at the finish line by race ambassador and three time world half marathon champion Geoffrey Kipsang kamworor, former Olympic and world marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich, Amsterdam marathon champion Bernard Kipyego among others.

Davis Kiprotich finished second in 63:11.7 as Wesley Kimutai completed the podium in 63:15.0.

After losing Kisii half marathon title last week, Cynthia Jerop won women’s title after winning the race in 71:30.

The reigning Hannover half marathon champion has set her focus to win Standard Chartered marathon title, Jerop said she wanted to revenge when he was raced down by an opponent hence failing to finish.

“I came here with two reasons: to win the race and set revenge after I was toppled to lose Kisii title. Apart from that, my focus has shifted to win Standard Chartered marathon,” said Jerop who was motivated by her coach Stephen Maiyo never to lose hope once in a competition.

Jerop who also finished third at the 2018 half marathon defeated former world junior 3,000m champion Alice Timbilil and former world half marathon bronze medalist Sally Chepyego.
