Ugandan athletes trounced Kenyan runners at the start of track events in the opening day of athletics in the ongoing Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Mercy Chepkorir and Jackson Muema all qualified into the second round in the 3,000m and 800m respectively after falling to Uganda’s Sarah Chelangat and Oscar Chelimo.
Chalangat trounced Chepkorir and Ethiopia’s Abersh Belay for second behind to win in a personal best 9:11.63 in 3,000m.
Chepkorir outdueled Belay to cross the line in second place in 9:13.59 with the Ethiopian closing the first three finishes in 9:14.99.
Chelimo on the other side was too brilliant to defeat Ethiopia’s Berihu Teklehaimanot and Muema for another Ugandan win.
Chelimo crossed the line in 8:08.20 as Aregawi took second place in 8:09.17 with Kenyan crossing the line in third in 8:09.95.
