Former world cross country champion Agnes Tirop will be facing off with top athletes in the 15th edition of Tegla Loroupe 10km Peace Race on Saturday morning.
The Kapenguria event in West Pokot county will also see reformed warriors compete in a 10km as the race is used to create awareness on the importance of a peaceful society.
Following her win in last weekend’s win at Chebara Dam 8km cross country in Elgeyo Marakwet, Tirop will be using the event as part of her training ahead of Tuskys Cross country meeting a fortnight later.
In its fifteen years, the race will bring together communities from Pokot, Turkana, Marakwet, Karamojong and Sebei from Uganda following a successful refugees team which has been camping and training in Ngong, Kajiado County will also be represented.
In 2016, Loroupe was named the 2016 Person of the year by United Nations for her efforts to have refugees participate in the Olympic Games.
She is also remembered for organizing the first peace race in Kakuma Refugee camp in Turkana County to commemorate World Refugee Day as one way of promoting peace in the area in 2014.
