Reigning world under 20 5,000m champion Edward Zakayo will be taking on three cross country meetings as he tries to cut into the Kenya team ahead of World cross country championships.
The reigning Commonwealth Games 5,000m bronze medalist will begin his campaign at this weekend’s Cross International in Spain.
The on-form form three student at Kasait secondary school in Elgeyo Marakwet county said he is fit enough to reclaim some of the lost titles to other nations.
“I have had enough training and rest as I take to the world tasrgeting three titles,” said Zakayo who signed a contract with Dr. Rosa Associati training camp based in Kaptagat, Uasin Gishu County.
From Cross International on 11th November, Pingua will move to reclaim the Campo Travel International Cross country in Soria, Spain a week later.
Campo meeting has been dominated by Ugandan runners in the recent three years as Emmanuel Bett is the latest Kenyan to win the title in 2013 which was inaugurated in 1994.
As part of his campaign to compete for the Kenya at the forthcoming world cross country championships in Aarhus, Denmark in March 2019, Zakayo won silver during the world under 18 3,000m silver medal. His photo went viral when he by-passed many athletes lying on the track as he walked freely to the dressing room after the race.
“Such cross countries will help me to develop skills as I target to compete at the world cross country championships,” said Zakayo.
The Africa Athletics championships 5,000m champion will end the Spain tour when he will be competing at the Cross International De la Constitution on 25th November.
Zakayo will be hoping to redeem Kenyan image by winning the title that was last won by Bett (28:00) in 2013 but it has been dominated by Kenyan runners since its inception in 1982.
