Geoffrey Oronyi and Albert Angila will be leading Western Kenya Scrabble team as Kisumu hosts the National Scrabble Tournament ahead of the African Scrabble Championship to be held at the end of the month in Kirinyaga County.
The last tournament before the continental show has attracted top Scrabble Kenya players across the country to try and make a cut into the national team popularly called Word Warriors.
Top seed Allan Oyende is expected at the event following his back to back wins in Kitale and Mombasa.
The tournament will be comprised of two divisions. As the norm is, neither the premier division nor the open division will be a walk in the park, as history has proven that Western Kenya-hosted tournaments have some of the toughest players fielded in the open division.
The Kisumu Team has, however, been practicing through the months and they have vowed to contest for top spots in both divisions.
The tournament serves as part of the preparation for the continental showdown that is slated for the 28th November to December the 2nd, 2018, at the Destination Resort Center, Kirinyaga. Already, over 12 countries have registered, and it will be an uphill task for the Kenyan team in trying to topple the continental and global champions, the Nigerians, who will be led by their top player, Wellington Jighere, during the end year board wars.
