World under 20 5,000m silver medalist Stanley Waithaka ended the kenyan drought by winning the 65th edition of Amorebieta Cross Country meeting in Spain on Sunday.
Waithaka brought back the podium memory after Kenya failed to clinch the title in the last five editions, as he fought for the honors with 17-year-old Oscar Chelimo from Uganda and his fellow compatriot Solomon Boit.
The 18 year-old who ran a world leading time in Yokohama’s Nittai University Time Trials series late last year was all smiles after being pushed by Chelimo to the tape winning the race in 31:58.
The Ugandan crossed the line few micro seconds later but was given same time as Waithaka.
Boit closed the podium three finishes in 32:03.
The race course time of 29:33 that was set in 2016 by Uganda’s Thomas Ayeko remained unshaken.
In the women’s race Trihas Gebre successfully defended her title clocking 30:36 to lead a Spanish sweep. Veteran duo Elena Loyo crossed the line second in 31:28 with Maitane Melero sealing the podium finish in 31:30.
