Hannah Wanjiru and Martin Gache won their respective races at the Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya championships cum national trials ahead of the inaugural Africa Deaf Athletics Championships to be held in Nairobi.
Wanjiru won 5,000m title to qualify continental championships after beating race favourite Juster Kwamesa at Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Wanjiru cut the tape in 19:37.7 ahead of Kwamesa who timed 20:13.4 to finish second while Laureen Ngonga from Kakamega completed the top three places in 20:40.0 as Grancy Jebichi (21:40.0) and Deonidah Okiago (21:42.3) sealed the top five places with all athletes making the cut which stands at 24:00 minutes.
Gache won the men’s 5,000m after timing 14:49.99 Omar Kokobi in 14:56.95 for second place and Amos Langat who finished third in 14:57.06.
but it was a big blow for World 3,000m steeplechase record holder Lucas Wanjiru who clocked 15:12.46 for the fifth position to all make the cut that stands at 18:00 minutes.
