Fresh from representing Kenya at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) in Tanzania, Mbooni Secondary will lead other institutions at the Kaimosi Forest Handball Extravaganza Open tournament to be held this weekend at Kaimosi Friends University College Grounds.
The coast-based school will be chasing the title with Kenya’s top handball teams in the two-day event that starts on 21st to 22nd has attracted teams from across the country.
With such national attraction, Western Region Kenya Handball Federation secretary Shisoka Akaka has described the tournament as a national tournament rather a region one.
“If we have teams coming all the way from Nairobi to compete in such event, then it is turning out to be a national event and not the region as we have been doing in the past,” said Akaka.
Akaka said that 26 teams have already entered ready to battle for the title as they are still expecting more teams to register for the competition.
“Today, Thursday, we have received 26 teams and more have promised to compete and before Friday evening, we will have many teams fielding their good players,” said Akaka.
As part of their reasons to grow the sport in the region, Akaka said that they expect the extravaganza to be very competitive with high standards.
The biggest western region tournament has attracted top teams from the regions where juniors have dominated the event.
“As we speak now, we have a mixture of juniors and senior players from various clubs and we expect a tough challenge,” said Akaka.
He said that preparations are quite on course and confirmations coming in thick and fast from all over the country.
“Western Kenya based universities have dominated the registration and we are expecting more learning institutions and individual clubs to compete” added Akaka
