Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) side Solasa Falcons have been crowned the champions Spare The Girl, Kick the Ball Solasa Women football tournament played in Eldoret on Sunday 10th.
Falcons defeated their Division One side Solasa in a tournament dubbed meant to fight Gender-based Violence that attracted eight teams from Busia, Kakamega and Kisumu in a two-day event at Golden Gateway Primary school Ground.
Grace Khatete scored the only in the 82nd minute to seal the victory for the team that remained unbeaten as they fight the sexual exploitation among young and vulnerable girls especially in slum areas.
Falcons captain Linda Nyongesa said since they are off-season, they used the tournament as part of their preparations for next season after finishing 10th in the league.
“Such tournaments bonds players and it is a good training ground for some of us who are not engaged in any league,” said Nyongesa.
Her counterparts Cynthia Matekwa was it was nice for the tournament after they failed to honour all their Division Two matches.
“As a team, it was nice playing because we have not been together for long. The team has not been training but once we heard of the tournament, we regrouped and here we are, finishing second. It is a big achievement,” said Matekwa.
Falcons thrashed Butere A 4-0 with Marvel Simiyu netting a hat-trick as Immerculate Nabwire scoring one at the semifinal to storm final to play the already quailed Solasa Queens who had beaten Butere B by a solitary goal courtesy Cynthia Matekwa.
