Kenyatta University rugby team Blak Blad were the winners of the 7th edition of Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) rugby sevens title played at Moi University-Main Campus.
The Kenya Cup side came from 07-0 down to defeat KRU Championships The University of Eldoret team Trojans 07-17 to win their title back.
First to touchdown was Trojans’ Edwin Yatich who converted his try for a 7-0 lead in favour of UoE but Dennis Odhiambo’s try reduced the score to 7-5 after Lionel Ajelit failed to convert.
Ian Obukwa went past the try line for the second with Sheldon Khai failing to convert for a 7-10 lead for Blad before Ajelit converted his own try to win the title on 07-17.
The win was good for head coach Williams Motto saying their experience played a critical role for the title.
“UoE did not want to lose the second match to us but we managed to use our experience to win the title,” said Motto.
He added that they used Kenya Cup experience as well as sevens series to win the title.
“We have very consisted in Kenya Cup and sevens series and we had to use the same to win our title. As a team, we had to change the strategy to know the does and don’ts in any match. We always play top teams like KCB, Kabras Sugar among others so our experience played a role. Majority of these universities play at Championships,” assured Motto.
