Unstoppable Gitonga in back to back Scrabble Kenya win

Kirinyaga county’s Nderitu Gitonga registered back to back wins in the second leg of Scrabble Kenya national tournament that came to an end today at Parkside Villa in Kitui County.

Following his victory last month in Nairobi, Gitonga who enjoyed day one lead won the title in a tournament that attracted 100 players from all over the country.

He registered 13 wins out of 18 with +699 points to move from second seed to topple Allan Oyende to Kenya One with an overall rating of 1921.

Second place went to Onani Magwanga who also bagged 13 wins but with an inferior spread of +592

Michael Gongolo from Nairobi County, got bronze with 12 wins +915. Fourth place went to Stanley Njoroge from Kiambu County who got 11 points +483 while Scrabble Kenya’s organising secretary Tony Ochola closing the 5th places with 11 wins – 26.

In the Intermediate division, Edwin Bii won gold with a round to spare to finish with 15 wins ahead of Tom Mboya who won 12 games with Bronze going to Francis Gichu from MMUST who had 11 wins. Gichu won the best student award for the second time in a row. Fourth place went to Robert Amuti from Mombasa County while host Robert Nguli closed the podium.

The Open Division was fireworks throughout the 16 games. Lawrence Matunda of Equity Bank emerged victorious with a total 13. 5 wins, despite his slow start.

Teresia Muthoni took silver with 12. 5 wins in her maiden tournament while Nicole Okoth  of AFC   won bronze.

High game went to Joshua Ogola with a total of 625 against Jerry Lomorukai.

Most improved rating went to Nicole Okoth with +364 while the best female award went to Wamucii Irungu.

The next national tournament will be hosted in Bungoma in March.
