Obiri, Cheruiyot too hot to handle at Monaco league

Reigning world 5,000m champion Helen Obiri and world 1,500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot were the winners of the Monaco Diamond League held on Friday night in France.

Obiri, the reigning Olympic Games 5,000m silver won 5,000m title ahead of World 10,000m silver medallist Letesenbet Gidey from Ethiopia.

The world cross country champion romped into victory with a meeting record of 14:22.12 as Gidey settled second in 14:26.57 as Briton Laura Weightman (14:35.44).

World 3,000m steeplechase champion Beatrice Chepkoech, came in sixth in season best 14:55.01.

cheruiyot won the 1,500m title in 3:28.45 ahead of Jakob Ingebrigtsen from Norway (3:28.68) as Jake Whiteaman in 3:29.47.

Kenya’s World 800m bronze medallist Ferguson Rotich settled eighth in season best 1:45.48 in a race where the leading athlete hit the bell at 50.40n seconds.
