Sinyolo yearning to defend title

High altitude in Eldoret has fully affected East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association hockey girls defending champions Sinyolo Girls as they seek revenge against Kerugoya Girls who beat them in Rwanda last year.

Coming from a low altitude area of Kisumu, Sinyolo girls will be defending the title are taking time to adapt the high altitude climatic conditions but head coach Aloise Owino believes that camping in the region early is good before the match kicks off.

“This region is too cold compared to Kisumu but the girls are slowly to the climate so that when the games kick-off, they will do well,” said Owino.

As the defending champions, Owino admitted they are under pressure as champions.

“Being a champion anytime you pressure mounts on you. All teams will train on how to defeat you but we are up to the task to defend our title,” said Owino adding that the mood in camp is good and the players are happy as they are prepared against the first match against Kerugoya who beat them last year in the regional games.

Sinyolo will open their title defence against Kenyan side Kerugoya. They will play in round robin format. At the same time, Owino said Kenyan teams are tough and will face Kerugoya and Tigoi will pose a tough challenge.

But he said Ugandan teams are coming up like Kakungulu beat Kerugoya in Rwanda and it may pose a challenge too.

“We are on revenge mission against Kerugoya girls who beat us last year. It is the only team that will pose a tough challenge on us,” he said.

The sediments were echoed by Captain Ivin Anyango saying they are much better than at the national champions and they are going to defend their title.

“All teams are training for Sinyolo and not winning the trophy. So on our side, we will be working on how to win the trophy. We lost to Kerugoya last year but this time they will not manage to win. The goal they scored was through a minor mistake that we rectified. This is like an exam where you have been preparing for a long time, just waiting for the paper to come,” said Anyango.
