Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) overcame Equity Bank and Co-operative Bank over the weekend to remain unbeaten in the Kenya Basketball Federation women’s Premier League.
They beat Equity 65-45 on Saturday before dismissing Co-op Bank 61-51 on Sunday.
KPA has one more home game to play against Kenyatta University Oryx next weekend to confirm their top spot finish.
Despite the loss, Equity finished second on 32 points and will get a bye to the playoffs semifinals.
Their straight qualification was confirmed on Sunday after Strathmore University lost 37-43 to United States International University- Africa (USIU-A).
Strathmore finished with 31 points while USIU-A has 29 with a game to play. On Sunday, Strathmore went into the game needing a win to capitalize on Equity’s slip up and they gave USIU-A a good fight.
The game was a close contest all through until the fourth quarter when Strathmore lost it. The experience of Angela Okoth and Sarah Chan counted heavily for USIU-A.
Strathmore won the first quarter 10-5 after dominating for the entire period. They went for a 6-0 scoring run in the opening moments with USIU-A scoring all their points for the quarter from the free-throw line. In the second quarter, USIU-A fought back with Chan leveling 10-10 with a basket.
Barbra Samba then shot Strathmore up 11-10 with a free shot. USIU-A had their first lead of 15-14 with a basket from Cynthia Irankunda but Samba made it 16-15 for Strathmore.
USIU-A won the quarter 12-8 as Strathmore led 18-17 at the breather. Third quarter was the closest to call in the game but USIU-A had an upper hand winning 14-12 and leading thrice at 19-18, 29-28 and 31-29.
Strathmore led once at 22-21 with a 29-29 tie. Strathmore had a poor start into the fourth quarter. With six minutes played, they had not scored as USIU-A went for 11-0 to lead 41-30.
They managed to pull back some crucial baskets but fell short of clinching the win.
Chan top scored for USIU-A with a game high 20 points while Susan Manya scored eight free shots to top score for Strathmore with 12 points.
Double blow for KPA
In the men’s Premier League, it was a double blow for KPA as they lost two home games. They were beaten 67-52 by Equity Bank on Saturday and 65-59 by Co-op Bank on Sunday.
Lions as well suffered a huge blow in their fight against relegation after Strathmore University was awarded a 20-0 walkover win despite showing up. In another game, USIU-A beat Strathmore Blades 54-47.
The first quarter ended in a 12-12 tie after Blades led 2-0, 4-3 and 10-8 while USIU-A ld 3-2, 7-6 and 11-10. There was a 8-8 tie. In the second quarter, USIU-A went clear with a 12-point lead at 30-18 going to halftime. They won the quarter 18-6 and led thrice at 14-12, 17-15 and 19-17.
Both teams tied 15-15 and 17-17 in the quarter. USIU-A won the third quarter 12-8 after opening up a 19-point lead of 41-22 before Blades won the fourth 21-12. Kevin Kigotho top scored for USIU-A with 17 points and Derrick Juma added 14.
Joseph Ongoro scored 12 points for Blades.
