JKUAT, UON are champions

Ready to host the East Africa University Games next month, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) won the basketball title in women’s category to be assured of playing on their own home soil.

JKUAT won the title on the last day of the Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) held in Eldoret at Moi University, West campus courts on Sunday evening.

It was also great day for University of Nairobi (UON) representing Nairobi Conference (Nakusa) where the universities were divided into six conferences: Central (CEKUSA), Coast (COKUSA), Rift (RIFTKUSA), Western Kusa, Nairobi (NAKUSA) and Nairobi South (NASOKUSA) conferences.

To ensure that they had what it takes to fly Kenyan flag high, JKUAT edged out Mount Kenya University (MKU) with a narrow margin of 17-14 in the women’s finals to win the trophy.

Their winning formula was exhibited when JKUAT mercilessly thrashed Embu University 24-4 in the semi-finals to book for final slot. But MKU survived by a whisker to the hosts Moi West Campus in the semi final match winning with 13-17 to advanced to the finals.

UON men’s side won the title to stamp their authority as the main challenger at the regional games.

In an entertaining match final match UON, with its high powered delegation and cheering squad narrowly beat Mount Kenya University (MKU) 29-25 to bag the crown.

It was a do or die match for both teams who exhibited great ball dribbling skills almost equal in every tactic they unleashed by MKU but UON were too smart beating their opponent with their skills as each time they got on the ball, it was counted as a score as they rarely missed to convert.

To advance to the finals, UON beat United States International University Team A 28-13 while MKU on the other hand defeated University of Eldoret  27-22.

UON captain Vitalis Wagome praised his side saying it was a hard game but teamwork played well.

“The opponents were almost equal us but we had to do a lot of teamwork hence we beat them,” Vitalis said.
