Time has come for sportsmen and women to take up sports management starting from the Cabinet Secretary for sports since the current post is like vacant.
Athletes gathering during the home welcome of former world marathon record holder Wilson Kiprotich Kipsang on his graduation ceremony last weekend at Muskut village after he graduated with degree in Criminology and Security Studies.
Led by Cherangany MP Wesley Korir, who is the 2012 Boston marathon champion has called on the Jubilee administration to reconsider appointing sports individuals to take charge as a Cabinet Secretary.
Korir who joined politics in 2012 and won against United Republican Party bigwig Joshua Kutuny and he made the remarks as Kipsang, announced his bid to vie Keiyo South MP seat come 2017 general elections.
Korir said sports personalities had been sidelined from key positions for many years.
He spoke a party to celebrate Kipsang’s graduation from Mt Kenya University with a bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Security Studies.
“Whenever our president, Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto traverse this region, remind him to consider appointing a cabinet secretary who has an experience in the sports arena, I insist because I am optimistic that Jubilee will form the next government,” he said.
Korir said the current leadership in sports has failed to resolve issues affecting sports people because they don’t understand sports quite well.
Kipsang becomes another athlete or sports person to venture into murky waster of politics and he will be joined former 800m Olympic champion Wilfred Bungei who will face the electorate at Emgwen constituency in Nandi County.
Kipsang and Bungei, if elected they will join 2000 Boston marathon Elijah Lagat of Chesumei in parliament, former national volleyball player Dan Wanyama, the MP for Webuye West.
Other athletes in politics include Christoper Cheboiboch, a runner up in Boston and Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Emsoo ward in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Wilson Boit Kipketer, a former world 3,000m steeplechase record holder and MCA for Kabiemit Ward and majority leader in Elgeyo Marakwet county Assembly. Road race specialist Bisluke Kipkorir will be vying for MCA of Kimumu ward in Uasin Gishu County.
