Kipchoge Keino stadium has been earmarked for hosting Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) set for 2018.
Sports Kenya director and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Doris Petra said that renovation of the facility will be of great importance as the facility can host some matches.
“This facility has been in our mind that it will host some games when we host CHAN next year. We want to improve seven other stadia in the country,” said Petra.
She added: “We expect this work to take eight months to end. We are looking ahead for this facility to be used by athletes and 2018 FKF competitions that will see 16 teams in Kenya and this stadium has been identified as one of the facility to be used.”
With top notch football not using the facility of, Petra said some teams have been intending to use the stadium but they have not been making a serious follow up.
“The reason why the facility has not been used by top flight football is because it lacks infrastructure like perimeter fence, sufficient water supply and changing rooms. But FKF recognizes this area and very soon, we will have international friendly matches played on this facility,” said the FKF vice chairperson.
She explained that for FKF to bring international matches to Kipchoge stadium, certain standards must be met by federation of International Football Federation (FIFA) before they are used.
“Posta Rangers wants to use this as their home ground but discussions are still going on. Local teams like Eldoret Falcons, GFE 105 among others, have to identify this facility and use it,” concluded Petra.
