Former athlete Moses Tanui to Captain Eldoret Golf Club


Popularly called Mr. Boston in his golfing cycles, double Boston marathon champion Moses Tanui will his weekend wear another hut as Eldoret Golf Club captain after he was elected by the majority.

As an athlete, Tanui won 10,00m silver medal at the 1993 World championships in Stuttgart and will be taking over from outgoing Captain Sandeep Sigh Grewal on Saturday.

His metamorphosis-from track, to road, cross country, marathon and now a golfer, Tanui has made in sports as all his activities across the country has been revolving around sports.

In his career as a golfer, the 1995 world half marathon champion has churned out his expertise by playing and winning another of golf competitions and even sponsoring some of the tournaments at the club was very delighted for the post especially juniors, whom he describes as future golfers.

“I am humbled by the handing over of this mantle to me. I want to commit myself that I will deliver through your support,” Tanui said.

The 1997 world half marathon silver medalist said he is determined to developing junior golf talent in a bid to breed talent for Youth Olympic Games.

The 2002 Vienna marathon champion last year he sponsored the Junior Golf Championships where young golfers from different parts of the country took part.

“We have global competitions where other countries are fielding junior golfers. In Kenya we haven’t concentrated on it so much and I want to be an example in nurturing young talent,” Tanui said.

He said he will work together with Junior Golf Foundation in building structures towards development of the talent such as introducing golf in schools and advocating for establishment of public golf courses.

“I am are  very much focused on junior golf development, and I  believe that Kenya will for sure produce the next Tiger Woods,” he added.
