U.o.E, MMUST in quarter women football

Western Kenya football was put to test and proved when University of Eldoret (UoE) and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) won their respective matches to qualify for Saturday’s quarter finals in women’s football  in the Kenya University Sports Association championships in MMUST ground.

MMST will be defending the football title while UoE while be seeking revenge against the champions who lost last year at the final level.

MMUST’s Ednah Sumba scored twice as Pauline Musungu and Vivian Kudero also scored in a 3-0 goal galore against Pwani University.

The win delighted coach Tibias Lihanda who said all is well in the team and hopes to extend the lead into the regional championships.

“We have started very well and we hope this is an eye opener for our players as we seek to retain both our national and East Africa title,” said Lihanda.

In the second match, MMUST walloped experienced Unoversity of Nairobi 5-0.

The early morning play for Eldoret based UoE proved worth as they beat Embu University 3-0 in pool A. Nancy Gutwa, Gacheri Gitonga and Egline Chelagat netted for UoE.

The Joshua Ariko led charges lost last year title to MMUST and Ariko will be seeking revenge if they meet at the final again.

“We lost by a whisker but this time we are well prepared,” said Ariko, who coaches the Eldoret falcons, the Kenya Women Premier League side.

They won their second match against Mount Kenya University (MKU) by a solitary goal scored by Diana Onyango.

It was a similar show in men’s category as hosts Derick Odanga netted a hat-trick and the only goals to beat Machakos 3-0 in the opening match at Approved school before ending the day with a solitary goal from Barry Mulama to beat Taita Taveta University to book for quarter final play.
