Reigning champions Wiyeta, St. Anthony’s Kitale are champions

Reigning National under-16 soccer champions Wiyeta and St. Anthony’s High school have an opportunity of defending their titles at this year’s national championships to be staged in Mombasa at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association.

The two teams for girls’ and boys’ representing Trans Nzoia County maintained their unbeaten run to win the Rift Valley Secondary School Sports Association Term 2A Games which ended on Friday at Hill school ground, Eldoret.

Wiyeta came from a goal down to win the regional title with Gentrix  Shikanga scoring a brace for her team to beat their arch-rivals and neighbours former national champions Tartar from West Pokot 2-1.

Tartar opened the score though Milicent Yanot’s header on 26th minute from corner kick by Elizabeth Wafula as they went into break with 1-0 up.

Shikanga’s long shot from outside the box beat keeper Ruth Nanyama on 45th minute to level the score at one all.

With four minutes to the final whistle, slotted in the ball past the keeper as the second to seal victory for Wiyeta on 54th minute.

The game ended 2-1 with the champions confident of retaining their national crown in the games that will kick off from June 3 in Mombasa.

Their tactician Wamalwa Awoh was delighted saying they were overpowered in the first half but tactical arrangement after the breather bore fruits.

“You know my girls lost concentration in the first half but when we went for a break, I told them what to do and exactly they did and we won. We are now focusing on defending the national title,”Awoh said.

In handball, former national champions St. Francis Cheptarit regained their former glory after winning 18-12 against Kirandich in the finals while Sinyereri narrowly won 24-23 against Saniak from Nandi after a 17-17 draw in the normal time.

In netball Cheptil ran over Kapatagat 51-17 in the finals.

RVSSSA chairman Kipchumba Maiyo praised the competitiveness in the games saying they are targeting an overall title in the nationals.

“Last year we were position one in term one games but we are targeting to win the overall term 2 title. The teams are very competitive and we expect the best of them,” Maiyo said.
