Top teams face off in KPL

Big teams-Gor Mahia and Ulinzi- will be in action this weekend to collect maximum points in the second leg of Kenya Premier League (KPL).

Rangers and Ulinzi Stars, who sit third on the standings, lurk close eager to capitalise on any slip-up from the former champions.

On Sunday, Rangers take on high-flying Nzoia Sugar at the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma while AFC Leopards, who drew 1-1 with Western Stima in their last league outing on Wednesday, welcome Bandari at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru in the second match of the day at the venue from 4.15pm.

Sofapaka will face Thika United at the same venue from 2pm aiming to build on their 3-2 midweek win over Muhoroni Youth.

Winless in their last five league matches, champions Tusker host Western Stima in Kinoru desperate to arrest their poor form which has seen the brewers drop to fourth, five points behind leaders Gor Mahia. The brewers lost 1-0 to Posta Rangers on Wednesday, a result that left coach George Nsimbe under pressure to steer back brewers to victory this weekend.

“We still have hope as a team and we shall win this title. I believe in the boys. Goal scoring is our only problem but it is nothing to worry about. We shall bounce back,” Nsimbe said on Friday at Ruaraka after midfielder Jackson Macharia was named the club’s Player of the Month for July.

The brewers are set to welcome back midfielder Hashim Sempala, who has missed their midweek loss to Posta through suspension.

Ugandan import Villa Oromchan has emerged as Western Stima’s secret weapon, his combination with former Ulinzi Stars forward Ezekiel Otuoma proving deadly the last few matches.

Stima coach Henry Omino is eager to complete a double over Tusker at Kinoru.

“We have finally gelled as a team and the results are going our way, just like I had predicted when we were at the bottom of the log some months ago,” Stima coach Henry Omino said.

Fierce AFC Leopards coach Robert Matano will lead his team against Bandari in Nakuru eager to return to winning ways after losing one and drawing the other against Western Stima in their last two league outings.
