IAAF worlds: Obiri leads Kenyan Chepkirui, Chelimo in 5,000m final

Olympic 5,000m silver medalist Hellen Onsando Obiri won against the world 5,000m defending champion Almaz Ayana to win the first heat of IAAF World championships.

The Olympic Stadium show in Great was good for Obiri who won by a few seconds to Ethiopian Ayana who last week won gold in 10,000m.

Obiri and Ayana faced off in 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro where Vivian Cheruiyot won the 5,00m title followed by Obiri and Ayana coming third.

The duo-Ayana and Obiri will be facing off again in women’s final competition on Sunday, the final race of the world championships.

Obiri race 14:56.70 ahead of Ayana’s 14:57.06 before another Ethiopian Senbere Teferi completing the podium in 14:57.23.

Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui Kiprotich, the 2015 Africa Championships 5,000m champion came a distance 6th clocking 14:57.58 to qualify as the fastest loser.

Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi qualified in the second heat after finishing 5th in 15:00.09 Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey.
