NOCK Elections: Legendary runners Kipchoge Keino, Paul Tergat face off as twenty federations to participate

The forthcoming and much awaited National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) elections will be held on September 29, 2017.

The dates were set during an Extraordinary General assembly meeting at the NOCK headquarters on Tuesday, September 5th.
The meeting resolved that those who had not initially expressed their interests for an elective post by filling the nomination forms before the elections were called off in May, will be allowed to  seek for a seat.
“For those who had  already filled nomination forms earlier seeking for a seat will not be required to fill them afresh but it’s only for those individuals who did not,” said NOCK first vice chairman Ben Ekumbo while addressing the press.
The development paves way for the incumbent chairman the legendary Hezekiah Kipchoge Keino to seek for re-election and put paid to the election of five times World Cross Country champion Paul Tergat who had been elected unopposed after the legend failed to seek for nomination forms.

Kipchoge confirmed that he will be seeking for re-election against Tergat who is an International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The NOCK executive defended the decision of fresh nominations which was a against the IOC directive which the international body had ordered that elections be conducted from where it had reached before the polls were stopped by the Kenya Taekwondo Association through a court order after being left out of the process.

The executive said they used the NOCK constitution by invoking Article 76.6 which mandates it’s General Assembly to address electoral matters, rules and regulations.
The meeting resolved that sporting federations with court cases will not participate in the electoral process and were urged to fast track them in good time before the elections day.
The NOCK executive will meet the Centre for  Multi Party (CCMD) the electoral body mandates to oversee the elections come up with the rules and regulations.

Twenty federations and three NOCK executive officials will participate in the polls.
The three NOCK executive officials to vote are the IOC member, athletes and women’s representatives.

They include Athletics Kenya (AK), Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF), Kenya Wrestling Federation (KWF), Kenya Taekwondo Association (KTA), Kenya Badminton Federation (KBF), Kenya Amateur Handball Association(KAHA), Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF), Kenya Shooting and Rifles Association (KSRA) Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF).
