Kapsokwony High school in Mount Elgon will host the first 2018 Athletics Kenya (A.K) cross country championships on Saturday.
The Bungoma County based school will be full of activities as Isaac Kibet will be expecting to run his best cross country debut on home ground.
With athletes targeting to compete at the 5th edition of Africa cross country championships in Chlef, Algeria on March 17th.
Kibet, born in Kaptama will be making his first cross country race that enters its 5th meeting that has been dominated by local road races to open the 2018 calendar.
“Am targeting a win in my first cross country race. I have been doing well in road races and I have to test myself in cross country,” said Kibet.
Last year, Kibet finished second at the Baringo half marathon (62:56), he managed to finish third at Laikipia half marathon timing 63:26 and ending the year with Kalya half marathon in West Pokot county.
“I will be taking on experienced senior athletes in 10km and am expecting a win in my debut,” added Kibet.
Magdalene Masai from Masai family finished second in 2015 edition and last Sunday she finished third during Houilles 10km road race in France.
Western region Athletics Kenya chairman Francis Afundi said all is set for the event to open the New year.
Afundi said they are through with preparations ready for the championships.
“We are expecting a large turnout considering that we have come from a festive season those athletes should come and shed off their weight,” said Afundi adding that before the head office went into recess, they had ensured that the calendar is not interfered with.
