Kass Marathon, which was the top cream race in the region that cut across two counties of Nandi and Uasin Gishu, failed to take place last year, putting the region in dilemma of failing to host any marathon in a region that is the hub of all marathon runners.

And today, race director and two time Boston marathon champion Moses Tanui in collaboration with Uasin Gishu County Government launched a Eldoret City marathon where athletes will compete on the streets of Eldoret and 22nd April 2018 will be the first race.

The race will be a cash cow for marathoners as the winner for both men and women will pocket kshs. 3 million, second position at Kshs 1.5 million, third finisher to cash in kshs 1 million and trickling down to kshs 10,000 for tenth finisher.

“The region and especially Eldoret is the home to large number of world marathon champions and winners of big city marathons worldwide but ironically, the county does not have a marathon of its own, run entirely within its boarders as a way of celebrating the global success of its globally acclaimed athletes,” said Tanui.

The main sponsor, County government under governor Jackson Mandago are the main sponsors of the marathon.

Mandago said they had a dream of having a marathon and the five year idea will finally come to pass and urged other sponsors to own it

“This is the unique marathon to celebrate the success of the county’s and North Rift region athletes and place Eldoret City on the global map with regard organization abilities that will supplement the success of the athletes.

Athletics Kenya chairman jack Tuwei was optimistic that the race will be successful.

“Such marathon promotes the City and like other big world marathons, Eldoret will be on the global map. This will be the first of its own,” said Tuwei.
