Commonwealth Games: Christine Ongare to box Carly McNau in semifinal

Competing in women’s Flyweight, Christine Ongare is the only boxer remaining at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games after qualifying to compete in the semi final fight.

As team Kenya keep chasing for the first medal, the sensational boxer enjoyed on Wednesday as she knocked out Sri Lanker’s Jayasinghe Dulani flooring her two times in a three round fight that forced referee valeri Pastuhov to end the competition hence awarding the Kenyan victory.

It was also the unanimous decision from the five judges Atsuo Fujisaku (Japan), Sid Mokretari (Algeria), Mark Williams (Wales), Jonathan Wolper (United States) and Frank Fiacco (Canada) to award Ongare.

Ongare will box Carly McNaul of Northern Ireland in the semis where the winner will be assured of a silver medal and the loser settling for bronze.

Her opponent beat Ayisat Oriyomi of Nigeria. Ongare is the only Kenyan pugilist still in competition in Gold Coast with 10 of her teammates; including Olympians, Elizabeth Andiego and Benson Gicharu and Africa champion, Nick Okoth, eliminated.
