Youngsters Nelly Chebet won 5,000m race in the second day of 5th meeting of Athletics kenya Track and Field held at Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega County.
After winning her heat in 1,500m on Friday, Nelly beat Friday’s 10,000m champion Roselida Chepketer to take the title in 16:13.6 ahead of Chepketer’s 16:15.5 and Beatrice Begi, who finished second in 10,000m on Friday’s came third in 16:30.2.
Chebet, despite winning heat one with better time, did not compete in today’s race instead chose 5,000m.
“I happy tohave won the race. This is part of my training ahead of World junior championships,” said Chebet.
1,500m men was reduced to two runners-Justus Soget, the reigning 3,000m IAAF Muller World Indoor Grand Prix champion and 2014 world under 20 1,500m champion Jonathan sawe-as they raced to the podium.
But energetic Soget, watched on the sidelines by his coach Barnabas Kitilit won the race, relegating Sawe to the second position.
Soget who completed secondary education last year at Kirobon high school clocked 3:40.7 as sawe returned second recording 3:41.5 and Lawi Kosgei completed the podium in 3:41.9.
In women’s category, much hyped Eglay Nalianya, a member of Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia failed to live her expectations as she finished 3rd overall.
Nalianya, who won her heat on Friday, fell to Winfrida Mutili who won the race in 4:15.2 ahead Qualyne Kiprop (4:16.5) before Nalianya’s 4:18.1.
