Kenya, topped the 36-hole strokeplay qualifying list with an aggregate of 429 gross, beating Uganda by 14 shots at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course on Friday.
Top seeded Kenyan player Daniel Nduva, who is enjoying his home course advantage, fired two under par 69, while Edwin Mudanyi carded one under par 70 and Limuru’s John Karichu fired one over par 72 for the team’s 211 gross.
The locals had posted 218 gross during the morning’s round against Uganda’s 221 which included Adolf Muhumuza’s 69. During the afternoon’s round, Muhumuza again posted two under par 69 while the second best round was a 75 by Joseph Chinyaai with Ronald Rugumayo adding 78 for 222 and a total of 443 gross.
The strokeplay results mean Kenya will take on the team which finished at the bottom, which is Congo DRC – who borrowed two local players George Munyao and Adel Balala. Tanzania finished third on 454 gross which included Abas Adam’s 72 and Victor Joseph’s 73.
Finishing fourth on 472 gross was Rwanda while Burundi was a distant fifth with 493, just a shot better than Seychelles as Ethiopia posted a total of 506, with DRC finishing with on 522 finishing last.
The tournament enters its second day with the foursomes Saturday morning followed by the singles in the afternoon. The final round which will again be foursomes and singles will be held Sunday.
