Obiri, Manangoi Triumph in Doha Diamond league Opener

Fresh from winning world cross country title, Hellen Obiri and reigning world 1,500m champion Elijah Manangoi ruled in Doha, the IAAF Diamond League season opener yesterday.

Obiri, the world 5,000m champion won 3,000m ahead of Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba and Lilian Kasait completed the podium.

The Commonwealth Games 5,000m champion clocked 8:25.60 ahead of Dibaba, the 1,500m world record-holder returning second in 8:26.20 Kasait was third timing 8:29.02.

Dibaba destroyed the all Kenyan podium finish as Obiri, Kasait, 3,000m steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech (8:29.83), Caroline Chepkoech (8:29.89) and Gloria Kite (8:29.91-PB) followed in that order.

Running with his young brother George Manang’oi, the reigning Commonwealth Games 1,500m champion Elijah Managoi won the 1,500m title in 3:32.21 leading a 1-7 all Kenyan finishers.

Elijah beat compatriot Timothy Cheruiyot who came second timing 3:32.47 followed by Bethwell Birgen in third position in 3:33.12. Vincent Kibet (3:33.21) was fourth followed by Charles Simotwo (3:33.31), Ronald Kwemoi (3:33.99) and George Manangoi (3:34.00).
