Rift Valley region has started preparing for 2020 Kenya secondary schools Sports Association in earnest as they are set to host the school games in Nandi County.
The larger region with 14 counties won 2019 overall championships, winning both term one and term two championships that were hosted in Mombasa and Kisumu respectively, the region is set to host the term one game.
Regional’s Secretary-General Kirwa Koech said hosting the national championships will be pride for the region that has dominated the schools games for years with Kapsabet boys and girls as the main venues.
“School games are the best investments for future talents to promote sports in the country. It is in sports where cohesion is met without campaigning for peace,” said Kirwa adding that Rift valley is a region that has all tribes in the country, made up of rich and poor counties.
Apart from being the best, Rift valley enjoyed a large contingent of schools that is representing the country at East Africa Schools Games in Arusha Tanzania.
“The region has seven schools at the East Africa games plus a bulky number of athletes who have won medals and dominating the region,” added Kirwa.
St. Anthony’s high school Kitale is flying football and Hockey boys after winning the title in Kisumu last week and Mombasa, Itigo girls (football), volleyball girls finalists Cheptil in girls’ volleyball after losing to Kwanthanze, Lelmokwo, and the volleyball runner’s up, Laiser Hill who lost to Upper Hill in Rubgy7s and Kirandich girls and handball.
“Hosting such championships brings good investments and many goodies in the county, which is business growth and Nandi will be exposed to the entire world” said Kirwa.
At the same time, he urged county governments to invest a lot in sports infrastructure as Nandi hosts the national championships for the first time.
“County government should invest a lot in infrastructure to foster sports. Devolution should is a total game-changer in sports. The school games will prove that Nandi is really a source of champions,” explained Kirwa.
However, Kirwa called on sponsors to come on board to sponsor the championships, which will be free marketing just like what some companies do at the national championships.
