World cross champion Helen Obiri and Family Bank half marathon champion Daniel Simiu were crowned the champions of the first leg of Athletics Kenya cross country championships held today at People’s Park, Machakos County.
Obiri, the world 5,000m champion edged out reigning world 3,000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech for the 10km senior women’s title.
The Olympic 5,000m silver medalist won the title in 32:29.2 second ahead of Caroline Nyaga (32:46.8) before Kenyan born steeplechaser Winfred Mutile of Bahrain, finished third in 32:47.5.
In men’s 10km race, Simiu won the title in 28:27.7 edging out Isaac Kibet (28:54.68) and Elvis Cheboi finished third in 28:54.9.
