Rono, Cherotich win at AK first weekend meeting at Nyayo

Africa Junior 3000m bronze medallist Gideon Rono and 2021 Discovery Kenya champion Daisy Cherotich were the winners in the final day of the opening leg of Athletics Kenya Track and Field Championships held today at the Nyayo National stadium.

In less than two weeks after winning the national 8km cross country junior title, Rono from Torongo training camp in Baringo County stunned the reigning Commonwealth Games 10000m bronze medallist and national cross country champion Rodgers Kwemoi to win the men’s 5000m.

The junior runner won the title in 13:21.2 as Kwemoi was second timing 13:21.8 before national 5,000m champion Daniel Simiu completed the podium in (13:29.6) and Michael Kibet was 4th in 13:36.6.

In women’s 10,000m, Cherotich, who finished second at the national cross country championships won the women’s 10000m winning in 32:19.1 ahead of Everlyn Chirchir (32:37.9) and Joyce Chepkemoi (32:58.8).
