Commonwealth Games flyweight bronze medalist Christine Ongare and national welterweight champion Elizabeth Akinyi are set to face their opponents at the Konstantin Korotkov Memorial International Boxing Championships in Russia.
Ongare, just as Akinyi have all qualified for the Olympic Games set for Tokyo, Japan will be facing off with Estonian Diana Gorishnaya and Dominican Maria Moronto respectively.
Immediately the team landed in Russia they underwent a Covid-19 test before being granted entry into the “Bubble Stay” where participants are isolated from the general public at their accommodation and no spectators are allowed at the games venue.
With cold weather in Russia, the boxers will join other 20 nations are represented at the event; hosts Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Sweden, Moldova, South Korea, Japan, Israel, Estonia, Cameroon, Algeria, Kenya, Morroco, Belarus, Dominican Republic and New Zealand.
A total of 31 female and 68 male boxers are searching for the honours with 26 female and 58 male bouts lined up in the seven-day competition ending May 16 at Lenina Regional Sports Complex Stadium.
In men’s category, Elly Ajowi has a date with Moroccan Bala Youness while Captain Nick ‘Commander’ Okoth got a bye to the next round.
