Obiri, Scott claim Great North Run titles

World 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri and Marc Scott were the winners of the 4th edition of Great North Run half marathon held today in New Castle, England.

Obiri, who on Tuesday lost the 5,000m to Francine Niyonsaba at the Zurich Diamond league won the 21km distance in 64.51 to become the fourth-fastest Kenyan female runner.

Obiri was followed closely Eilish McColgan who crossed the line 64:57 with Charlotte Purdue from Britain who pulled 68.49.

In men, kenya’s Edwin Cheserek was the best coming in second position behind the champion Scott. Scott cut the tape in 61.20 ahead of Cheserek’s 61.31 while the 2012 London Olympics silver medallist Galen Rupp closed the podium 61.52.
