Nandi Bears captain Simon Chepkwony shot an impressive round of eight over par 81 to grab a first round lead at the ABSA Bank golf tournament on par 73 Kitale golf club.
Playing off handicap 11, Chepkwony took to the top position with 70 nett to for an overnight lead ahead of tomorrow’s final round in the 36 hole tournament that teed off today.
He picked up a birdie in the opening hole to secure his good results despite dropping many shots in inward nine.
Chepkwony said he will be heading into tomorrow’s final with the head high with a purpose of lifting the title to Nandi.
With a birdie in one, he dropped a shot in 2, 3, and 4 recovered with a par in 5, dropped two in 6th, leveled in 7th, dropping in 8th and 9th for 43 gross.
“I had a bad start in the opening nine after failing to secure a caddie despite a perfect start with a birdie,” said Chepkwony.
Heading into tomorrow’s final, he said he has now known the course and secured a perfect caddie, who guided him in the second nine where he shot 38 gross with pars in 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th while he bogeyed in 12th and 17th for.
“I have now known the course with perfect caddie and I expect a win. My target is to play 68 nett,” he assured.
He leads with a shot better than second placed home player John Muhanji with 71 as Naomi Wafula, who was the best gross on one over par 74, playing handicap 2 to finish third overall with 72.
