Birdie lover Nelson Koech produbced a superlative performance to win the Open Shield title, the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series that came to an end today on par 72 Nandi Bears golf club.
Enjoying home course, Koech fired one under 71 in the second round to guide him win the title after he played level par in the first round for a total of one under par 143 at the final round.
In the opening round, he tied with Vetlab’s Ebill Omollo in round one with level par 72 in the first round to tie on the leaderboard.
He said that the tournament, being the first one at the club, he had challenges but the experience he has had in other clubs, playing in the same series gave him the power to overcome the challenges that comes with the pressure.
“I have played many tournaments and I have been very progressive in my results. When I played at the Muthaiga’s Match Play, I was in quarters, then moved to Vetlab where I was 12th overall, Kitale 9th, Kericho 6th and now the winner. This shows my progression,” said Koech.
The progressive Koech ensured that he the title does not leave his club as they hosted the first ever Kenya Golf Union (KGU) event.
In round one on Saturday, he managed to sink three birdies in one, 10th and 12th with a number of pars, two bogeys and one double bogey to enjoy a joint lead with Omollo but in the second round today, he shot four birdies in 1st and second, 4th and 11th with 12 pars to secure a one under 71 for the title.
He said that he wans to complete the season in top ten to earn a chance for the Kenya team slot come next year.
“Am doing tis because I want to feature in Kenya team next year,” said Koech who beat Limuru’s Dennis Maara to second
