Nandi Bears Koech win Goldfields title in Kakamega

Nelson Koech won his second Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) title, the Goldfields Trophy on par 72 Kakamega Golf club.

The Nandi Bears golfers fired three under par 69 in the second round, plus his +7 79 in the first round to win the title with four over par 148.

Koech, who was prepared to play end the game in a play-off against his club and training mate and round one leader Elly Barono said he was not sure that he was going to win until the last hole.

“It was a tense moment as I was prepared for the play-off if Barno was to sink a birdie but a miss for a par gave me a win that I did not expect, considering how badly I played in the first round,” said Koech.

However, he said that he went into the second round with a purpose to play well and finish top five.

“I played badly in the first round but am happy for the win. I have been practicing on this course and playing many tournaments just to familiarize myself and last Wednesday, we played club night here and that gave me an advantage,” he said.

As the western Kenya leader in the series, where in the first round, he fired one birdie in 6th, five pars and three bogeys for a three over par in the opening round, the followed in the second nine with four pars, four bogeys and a double bogey for a total of four over par with cumulative score of seven over par 79.

In his second round, he sunk four birdies, four pars and a bogey in the opening nine as he returned with a birdie in 10th, five pars three bogeys and a double bogey.
